Arvigo Maya Abdominal Therapy
I’m not sure where I first heard about the Arvigo Techniques of Maya Abdominal Therapy (abbreviated ATMAT). All I know is that it works so well for so many common health problems. This holistic abdomen-focused bodywork is comfortable, relaxing, and has serious impact for my patients.
What health problems can the Arvigo Techniques of Maya Abdominal Therapy treat?
Women’s Health: Fertility, Pre-conception, Pregnancy, Painful menses, Irregular menstrual cycles, Heavy menstrual bleeding from fibroids, polyps, adenomyosis, Pain of endometriosis, Interstitial cystitis, Chronic vaginitis or vaginosis without obvious infection, Post-partum, Poor libido
Digestive Health: Chronic constipation, Abdominal gas and bloating, Diarrhea or fast-transit, Nausea and stomach fullness, SIBO (small intestinal bacterial overgrowth), Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), Crohn’s Disease and Ulcerative Colitis (only when there is no active flare or infection), Liver and gallbladder stagnationl, Abdominal scarring and adhesions, Abdominal cramping
Men’s Health: Varicocele or hydrocele, Fertility challenges, Erectile Dysfunction, Low Testosterone, Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH), Low Libido, Low Energy/Fatigue
How long is a session?
I usually schedule first time appointments for 90 minutes, which gives me plenty of time to do a full naturopathic intake, physical exam, and first Arvigo session. Follow-ups are 60 minutes, and usually a good portion of the first follow-up is dedicated to teaching you the self-care techniques that you can use at home to help improve your condition.
What does a session feel like?
A classic Arvigo Maya session will include both a front and back treatment, on the frong working from where the ribs come together in the center to the top of the pubic bone, and on the back from the neck to the tip of the tailbone. A session feels similar to a Swedish or Deep Tissue massage session, but has a much more focused approach on realigning the pelvic/abdominal organs and the sacrum/hips.
How many sessions will I need?
It depends on what you’re being treated for, how severe your condition is, and whether we implement other naturopathic and/or acupuncture modalities at the same time we are doing Arvigo. For women’s health concerns, we like to see patients at least once per month for a series of 3-4 months, but may recommend more treatments in the beginning depending on your symptoms and level of concern.
Do you bill insurance for ATMAT therapy?
At Kwan Yin Healing Arts Center, we see patients for ATMAT therapy everyday and will bill insurance. Usually an Arvigo session is billed under naturopathic and physical therapy benefits, so contact your insurance company to find out whether you have physical therapy benefits, and if so, how many per year. It’s also good to check and see if you have a separate PT deductible aside from your naturopathic/medical deductible.
Is there anyone who can’t do ATMAT?
We do not do ATMAT for women in their first trimester of pregnancy, but otherwise will treat mothers throughout the 2nd and 3rd trimesters, before conception, and 4-6 weeks postpartum. We also avoid the abdominal portion of Arvigo bodywork for patients with IUDs, during active menstruation, immediately after abdominal surgery, and if there is an active infection in the abdominal or pelvic cavity.
